Rudraksha is the seed of Eliocarpus Ganitrus tree, mainly found in Nepal, Indonesia, and some parts of India. The tree is about 15 to 60 meters high and carries the seed for about seven years! It holds religious significance as well. When the word ‘Rudraksha’ is broken into two, then ‘Rudra’ means Lord Shiva and ‘Aksha’ means Teardrops. It is said that when Lord Shiva woke up after finishing meditation, a tear trickled down from his eye and fell on earth which became a Rudraksha tree. Therefore, it is known as ‘Teardrops of Shiva’ which is believed that it fell at the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal.
There are different types of Rudraksha with different ‘Mukhi’ or Face, ranging from 1-21 Mukhis. The vertical lines on the surface are called a Mukhi.
