Garnet

OVERVIEW

ABOUT GARNET

A garnet is a mineral made up of two or more elements that are combined together in a crystalline form. The colour of the stone can range from pale pink to dark red and various shades of green, depending on the type and composition of the mineral. While not as popular as diamonds, rubies, and sapphires, garnets are still widely used in jewellery because they provide unique beauty and can be quite durable. As garnets are SR (single refractive) gems, the cutter need not to worry about pleochroism while cutting garnets. There are more than 20 types of garnets but only 6 are commercially important. Some of the most common varieties include Hessonite garnet (shades of brown to red), Almandine garnet (deep red), Pyrope (dark red), Spessartite (orange-red), Grossular (light green to yellow-green) and Uvarovite (bright green). With so many sources around the world producing these gems at varying price points, you should have no problem finding exactly what you need within your budget!

FAQ’s

Authenticating a garnet can be quite tricky, but there is a basic test. The first step is to make sure the garnet has a certain heft, as real garnets tend to be heavier stones. If it feels especially light while holding it in your hand, then it may not be real.
Although many people assume garnets are found solely in rocks, they can actually be unearthed from a variety of sources. Commonly, these striking pieces can be extracted from rivers, lakes, and mountain streams. If a geological formation is sedimentary in nature, or if there have been volcanic eruptions in the past, some areas might be densely populated with garnet gems. Interestingly enough, certain types of garnet can even be spotted at the bottom of oceans and seas! With so many options to find this stunning stone, it's no wonder that they are so popular around the world.
Make sure to store it away from other pieces of jewellery or objects that could scratch it. Keep them in a place free from dust and heat. Before and after wearing garnet jewellery, gently clean it with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth or brush.

2.LOOK FOR TRANSPARENCY

Generally, people consider the darker the colour of hessonite garnet better it is. But in reality, transparency is foremost important because if a gem is transparent and free from inclusions, more sun rays will pass on to the body. So a transparent garnet shall be more effective astrologically.
